The hiking route from Otaki Forks to Mt Hector is a classic trek in the Tararua Range of New Zealand. Expect challenging conditions on the tops, including strong winds, mist, freezing temperatures, and rain/snow. Essential skills/experience include backcountry tramping in untracked areas and bad weather and navigation skills in low visibility. Take weather conditions seriously, especially above the bushline, and consider turning back if conditions are beyond your experience or equipment. Pack warm, waterproof clothing, an emergency shelter, distress beacon, map/compass or GPS, and extra food.

The trail begins at the Otaki Forks car park, which is located at the end of a gravel road about 19 kilometers east of Otaki. From here, you will follow the signs for the Field Hut Track, which is the first leg of the journey. The trail is well-marked and climbs a zig-zag track overlooking Otaki Forks then entering a beautiful native forest. After about 1.5 hours of hiking, you will reach Field Hut, which is a popular hut for overnight family stays.

From Field Hut, the trail heads up towards Kime Hut, which is located at an altitude of 1,400 meters. The ascent is steep and can be challenging, especially in wet or slippery conditions. However, the views of the Tararua Range from Kime Hut are well worth the effort.

After resting at Kime Hut, the final leg of the journey takes you up to the summit of Mt Hector, which is one of the highest peaks in the Tararua Range at 1,529 meters. The trail is well-marked but can be rocky and exposed in places, so it's important to take care with your footing. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The descent follows the same route back to Otaki Forks, so it's important to allow plenty of time for the return journey. Overall, the hike from Otaki Forks to Mt Hector via Field Hut and Kime Hut is a challenging but rewarding trek that showcases some of the best scenery that the Tararua Range has to offer.
