The Routeburn Track is a real stunner of a hike, and one of the most popular Great Walks in New Zealand. It’s located in the wilderness of Fiordland National Park, stretching across both the Otago and Southland regions of the South Island.
The track itself is around 32 kilometers long and takes around three days to complete, although there are plenty of shorter routes available for day hikes or half-day hikes. The trail is considered to be moderate in difficulty, with plenty of steep sections that can be challenging for beginners or anyone without a good level of fitness.
One of the best things about the Routeburn Track is the incredible scenery. From soaring mountain peaks and emerald-green valleys to cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear rivers, this hike really has it all. You’ll see everything from stunning native beech forests to tussock-covered mountain tops as you make your way along the trail.
The Routeburn Track is also home to a huge range of wildlife, including a variety of birds, reptiles, and insects. Keep your eyes peeled for kea, New Zealand’s iconic mountain parrot, as well as the elusive takahe, which was once thought to be extinct. You might even spot a cheeky possum or two on your journey!
If you’re planning on hiking the Routeburn Track, it’s a good idea to be prepared for a range of different weather conditions. It’s not uncommon for the weather to be wet and windy, even in the height of summer, so make sure you pack plenty of warm and waterproof clothing.
The Routeburn Track is an absolutely unforgettable hiking experience that you won’t want to miss. With its incredible natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and challenging terrain, it’s the perfect destination for anyone who loves getting out into the great outdoors and experiencing the very best that New Zealand has to offer.
